Email Personalization: How to Drive Traffic with Personalized CTAs

For me, personalization isn’t just about slapping someone’s first name into a subject line; that trick is too old and, of course, isn’t going to work today when everyone has grown numb to it. What actually moves the needle is personalizing based on where the user actually is in their journey.

In my experience, the most proven approach is to segment email audiences based on multiple factors such as campaign activity, preferred ad formats, industry/niche, and previous engagement. Rather than sending the same message to every subscriber, marketers can create different email journeys for new users, inactive advertisers, and users who have previously launched ad campaigns.

Ok, let’s understand this by taking an example. An advertiser who has previously shown interest in gaming-related advertising could receive an email specifically focused on reaching gaming audiences, with a CTA such as “Launch Your Gaming Campaign.” The CTA can then direct the advertiser to a relevant gaming advertising landing page instead of a generic homepage.

Similarly, if an advertiser has registered but has not yet launched a campaign, a generic “Learn More” CTA could be replaced with a more relevant message such as:

“You’re already registered. Ready to launch your first campaign?”

CTA: “Launch My Campaign”

This creates a clear connection between the user’s previous activity, the email content, the call-to-action, and the landing page they reach after clicking.

Effective personalization means delivering a relevant message, CTA, and landing-page experience based on the user’s interests and stage in the customer journey. When these elements work together, email can become a more targeted channel for bringing qualified visitors back to a website or landing page.

I’m sharing this perspective from firsthand experience, as this is exactly how we approach personalization at 7SearchPPC. As part of the PR team there, I’ve seen these segmentation and CTA strategies applied across real advertiser campaigns on our network, and the results consistently show that relevance, not just personalization for its own sake, is what drives clicks and conversions. So this isn’t just theory; it’s a practice we’ve tested, refined, and continue to build on.
