AI Won’t Fix Community Engagement Because Engagement Was Never the Goal

Alumni and membership groups as well as organizations of every stripe are moving quickly to incorporate AI into their communities. Intelligent recommendations, automated outreach, and AI-powered matchmaking promise to increase engagement and make networking more efficient.

Those are worthwhile goals, but they miss a larger point. Engagement was never the destination. It is simply the first step.

People do not join associations, alumni networks, or professional communities because they want another webinar invitation or one more email in their inbox. They join because they hope something meaningful will happen. They want to expand their network, join communities, and find mentors who can help solve problems. They also want to build confidence, discover opportunities, and connect with people who deeply understand the challenges they are facing.

In other words, they are seeking outcomes. The real question community leaders should be asking is not how AI can create more engagement but rather how AI can help create the relationships that ultimately drive those outcomes.

One of the main reasons I founded Upnotch was the idea that engagement was always just the beginning of the journey, not the destination. The real value emerges when conversations become relationships and relationships become trusted communities where people are willing to share what they’ve learned.

One Upnotch mentor, Charitha Krishnan, captures that distinction perfectly:

“The human connection is the best part of the mentorship experience. The true human companionship that’s there in learning and exchanging ideas is different.”

Her observation highlights something that technology can facilitate but not reproduce. Communities create value because they bring people together in ways that foster trust, perspective, and mutual growth.

Another mentor, David Dewinter, captured the distinction between information and experience equally well.

“Now I just ask AI for help, but when I need real experience, that’s when I go to Upnotch.”

Together, their comments reflect a broader shift taking place across professional communities. Information has become abundant. Experience and human connection remain scarce.

AI can answer questions, summarize content, surface expertise, and even facilitate introductions. These capabilities make communities more efficient and accessible, but they are not what ultimately drives participation and growth.

The outcomes organizations care about most still emerge from human relationships. Experience gained through navigating similar challenges, encouragement rooted in lived experience, and the context that turns information into meaningful guidance are things technology can support, but not replicate.

The strongest communities have always understood that engagement is only the beginning. Participation leads to conversations. Conversations lead to relationships. Relationships lead to outcomes.

Those outcomes take many forms. Sometimes they are career opportunities. Sometimes they are leadership skills, business partnerships, or the confidence to tackle a new challenge. Often they are the intangible benefits that members value most, including a sense of belonging and access to people they trust.

These experiences create a ripple effect throughout a community. Members who experience real value become more likely to stay involved. They volunteer. They mentor others. They introduce colleagues. They become advocates for the organization and strengthen the experience for future members.

None of this diminishes the importance of AI. In fact, AI has the potential to make communities more valuable than ever.

Technology can reduce friction and help members discover people they might never have met otherwise. It can surface shared interests, recommend mentors, and make networking feel less intimidating. Used thoughtfully, AI can expand access and make relationship-building more intentional.

What it cannot do, however,  is replace the human element that gives communities their purpose.

Community leaders do not need to choose between AI and human connection. The future belongs to organizations that understand how the two complement one another.

AI creates efficiency, but people create opportunity. AI can facilitate introductions, but only relationships create trust and accountability. AI can help members find each other, but it’s through human connection that one grows and realizes real gains.

The pace of AI adoption and evolution will only increase, but communities have an opportunity now to rethink how they define success. Engagement metrics will always matter, but they are only indicators that something more important may be happening beneath the surface because engagement is not the goal.

The goal is what happens next.
