Rumor has it The Mask may be coming back. Growing up, one of my favorite movies was that purple and green VHS box that contained some serious Norse magic that gave our millennial generation a nice glimpse into what a live-action cartoon would look like…starring Jim Carrey.

Sssmokin!!

There’s no question that The Mask one of the hottest comic book adaptations of our time, taking an ordinary man who just has shit-for-luck daily encounters, and turns him into a crazy-ass anti-hero/vigilante that does what he wants, when he wants. But he also has that pet dog and a smokin’ hot love interest played by none other than the beautiful Cameron Diaz.

It’s hard to imagine times before Marvel and The Avengers, but Jim Carrey owned television, whether it was in The Mask or his Ace Ventura persona.

And rumor has it that Warner Bros. is interested in resurrecting the adaptation for a new big screen debut. According to We Got This Covered, if Warner Bros. did bring back The Mask, it wouldn’t leave Carrey out of the picture, who would return to reprise his role as Stanley Ipkiss, the “unlucky everyman who becomes a living cartoon” everytime he puts on the enchanted Norse mask.

Unfortunately, Warner Bros. tried to revive the story with the 2005 release of Son of the Mask, which was absolutely god-awful. Don’t waste your time seeing it.

Adding to the story, We Got This Covered said:

You might remember there already being talk of a new Mask film over the summer, with co-creator Mike Richardson saying that he’s involved with a reboot that would bring the tone closer to the darker style of the comics and star a female comedian in the lead. From what we understand, both a female-led reboot and the Carrey-starring sequel could move forward as separate projects, as the studio is certainly hot on the idea of bringing the property back, but right now, it seems as if the one with Carrey is taking priority.

It’s still very early and these are simply just early discussions, but if this does happen, this would be absolutely sssmokin’!
