Meet Lisa Bowman, a “Marchitect,” and this week’s guest on our Like a Boss podcast. She vacated a senior marketing position at UPS to enter the world of non-profit. To explore new avenues for growth, Bowman joined The United Way, one of the most respected and largest non-profit organizations in the world. While there, she quickly advanced to the role of Chief Marketing Officer.

However, she experienced something unexpected while in her role. Bowman opened up in the Grit Daily Like a Boss podcast, sharing some of the challenges that she experienced. She was scrutinized given her level of visibility within the organization. And the harsh reality is that she was fired for speaking up against sexual harassment; what followed, was a very public #metoo confrontation.

Onward and upward

Bowman is resilient. Given the choice to give up or go on, Bowman chose the latter. On our podcast, she expressed her sincere interest in being there for others who are experiencing similar situations to “pay it forward.” Since then, she’s embraced her new role, Chief Mojo Officer, at MarketingMojo. Buoyed by communities of support, Bowman tapped her inner strength; and now she has her mojo back.

There is always an interesting story behind every unusual job title or company name. Because her dog possesses a certain “je-ne-sais-quois” charm, he earned the moniker, “Mojo, ” which sparked some inspiration behind her brand. And so it was a natural progression for Bowman to adopt the title, Chief Mojo Officer and to launch MarketingMojo.

I would not have chosen that experience for anything in the world, I believe that the situation chose me. I chose not to sit back and be silent. Looking back, if I could change one thing, I would not have placed as much trust in the organization to do the right thing.

In our podcast, she proposed some thought-provoking questions around the new contract between employers and their employees. Should there be a provision to enable psychological safety where employees can elect to work from home if they are uncomfortable returning to the office? Then she asked, “What is the new obligation in this era of COVID?” Tune into our podcast to hear more.
