We’re getting another Cinderella remake, but it’s not just any run-of-the-mill Disney remake. The classic fairytale is getting an update to better suit the modern audience.
The Cast
The days of a blond-haired blue-eyed Cinderella we’ve seen a thousand times are behind us. Instead, in director Kay Cannon’s version, Cinderella will be played by Camila Cabello in her debut acting role. The Cuban-American Grammy-nominated singer will also play an integral part in the music aspect of the film.
A Cuban-American Cinderella is not the only modernizing feature this remake is getting. Billy Porter is taking on the iconic role of the fairy-godmother. That’s right. Hollywood’s latest fashion favorite is going to be a genderless fairy godmother, and it’s going to be fabulous.
Porter is a Tony winner, a Grammy winner, and an actor on the acclaimed television series Pose. He’s known for taking risks on the red carpet, and if anything, his take on the fairy godmother is enough to make this remake of Cinderella worth watching.
Cabello and Porter aren’t the only superstar names on this cast. Idina Menzel, no stranger to Disney films, will fill the role of the evil stepmother. James Corden is both producing and acting as one of the mice. Pierce Brosnan will also star as the King.
A Remake With Something New To Offer
So far, we don’t know much about the plot, or any other details about this new Cinderella remake, but with a classic tale reimagined for a new generation brought to life with such a phenomenal cast, I have high hopes for how this production turns out.
This is how remakes should be. It seems like half the new movies or television series coming out these days are remakes. Too many of the recent remakes offer nothing new to offer the audience. They are canned reproductions of the same tired material and offer nothing new to the audience.
Remakes like this one are the way to do it. If Hollywood insists on remaking what’s already been done, they should update it and make it interesting for a modern audience. More representation, more diverse casts, and new voices are the way to do this. It’s okay to tell old stories, but tell them in new ways to better include a modern audience. This is what the Cinderella remake aims to do.
The film is going to hit theaters on February 5, 2021, so get ready for a whole new version of the Cinderella story.
